Homestead Exemption

New Homeowners: Obtain Proof of Residency Before 2025 for Homestead Exemption
Did you move to a new home in Florida this year? If you moved to a new home in Florida in 2024, be sure to obtain your proof of residency before January 1st to prepare for filing your homestead exemption in the new year. Check with your County's property appraiser for specific requirements for the homestead exemption.
Per the Lee County Property Appraiser's website, to be eligible to apply for the homestead exemption, "the property must be your permanent residence as of January 1." Two of the forms of documentation you will need to establish residency are:
- "A valid Florida driver's license or Florida ID card."
- "If you are a registered Florida voter, your voter registration must reflect the property address for which you are applying. If you are registered to vote elsewhere, you will not qualify."
So, be sure you have obtained your new Florida driver's license and voter registration by the end of this year to establish your proof of residency for the homestead exemption.
